Labs

We have just completed our first labs in Biology. We had 2 labs in one day. Both labs were all about observations. This is an introduction to the scientific method which we will be beginning next week. The first step in the scientific method being "observations."

The first lab we completed was looking at whether various specimens were living now, once was living or never was living. We investigated whether the specimens could move, reproduce, respond, and many others. All of these observations were qualitative. Meaning, that these observations were about qualities that the specimens possessed.

The second lab was a Length Lab. We measured boxes, lines, our shoes, pennies, etc. They students became familiar with millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers. Measuring things is a type of quantitative observations.

By using both qualitative and quantitative observations, the students have had a chance to differentiate between the two and see how different types of observations can be used for different situations.

In addition to completing the labs, students are asked to complete several questions pertaining to the Living/Nonliving lab. Please urge your student to give complete, thorough and well thought out answers. Consider what exactly the questions are asking and provide good solid answers. If you or your students have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email. I will be checking my email over the weekend.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
